Preparing young children for success in school.
A comprehensive, child development program for children aged 3 to 5, Head Start is a federal program for preschool children from low-income families. Children attending Head Start participate in a variety of educational activities. They also receive medical, dental and mental health care, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe, secure, social setting.
Butte Head Start serves 186 children in 2 facilities in Butte at no charge to qualified families. Last year, 100% of the children served were developmentally ready to start kindergarten at the end of the school year. The program offers a classroom style experience for kids with a wide range of developmental needs. Services can be coordinated to meet the special needs of children with disabilities. All classrooms are monitored by certified educators who teach curriculum designed to promote mental, physical, emotional, and social growth.
Children learn how to get along with others, share, play cooperatively, and solve problems in addition to forming the academic foundations of later school success. The staff encourage and welcome each parent’s involvement in Head Start activities, and will work as partners to help each child progress. In partnership with parents and the communities, Head Start facilitates school readiness for children, and fosters independence and personal responsibility for low-income families. Both children and parents are empowered with the ability to enrich their own lives as individuals and families, and in turn to enrich communities now and in the future.
Parent involvement is very important to Head Start. Because parents are the most important person in a child’s life, Head Start strives to include parents in all components of the program. The program encourages parents to try new activities and challenge themselves in the many educational classes offered.
